Samsung Electro-Mechanics has identified automotive electronics as one of its key growth drivers and has developed a high-voltage multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) applicable to electric vehicles, expanding its lineup of high-end automotive products.
On the 19th, Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced its plans to supply five types of automotive MLCCs, capable of providing stable power even in harsh environments with voltages over 630V, to global automotive parts suppliers.
The newly developed automotive MLCCs are advanced, high-value products that guarantee operating voltages of 1,000V and 630V, more than 100 times the 6.3V used in traditional information technology (IT) MLCCs. Electric vehicle battery systems, which operate at up to 400V, require high-voltage MLCCs for stable operation.

These products are intended for use in the onboard charging systems (OBC) of electric vehicles. OBCs, which charge the vehicle's battery using power from external chargers, are crucial components that determine driving performance and the amount of electricity that can be charged at one time.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics developed these high-voltage MLCCs by creating proprietary materials and altering the internal electrode structure, ensuring stable operation under high voltages.
The company states that the new products are durable enough to withstand high voltages while also eliminating high-frequency noise within the battery system, thereby enhancing stability.
With the trend towards high-voltage, high-performance battery systems for fast charging of electric vehicles, the market for high-voltage MLCCs is expected to grow from $4 billion this year to about $11 billion by 2029, at an average annual growth rate of 22%.
Choi Jae-yeol, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electro-Mechanics' Component Business, stated, "The development of these automotive high-voltage MLCCs proves our technological prowess in the field. By developing and manufacturing the core materials of MLCCs in-house, we aim to enhance our technological competitiveness, expand our market share in automotive MLCCs through facility internalization, and increase production capacity."
